Ballyboden St Lazarus reach heaven after five minutes in hell

Ballyboden St Endas 0-15 Clonmel Commercials 0-10 (after extra-time)

Congratulations to Boden who came back from the dead in Portlaoise yesterday to beat the Munster champions and reach the All Ireland Club final.

Clonmel Commercials put the local side to the pin of their collar and they will heartbroken this morning after blowing their chance to win the game in normal time.

That Boden did eventually prevail says much about their spirit and desire. Right now they have the look of a side that will not be beaten.

There had been nothing between the sides for most of the game with the teams trading scores until Clonmel edged three points ahead with five minutes remaining.

Boden had to try and mount a comeback with only 14 men after midfielder Declan O Mahoney was sent off for a straight red card.

But a breath taking finish to the game saw Boden score three points in injury-time with Darragh Nelson’s last ditch point forcing the game to extra time with the scores at ten points each.

Extra time turned out to be the Ballyboden show as they comfortably saw off the Clonmel challenge with five unanswered points.

Speaking afterwards, manager Andy McEntee was full of praise for his spirited players.

“Four or five minutes to go, a man down, three points down, having missed as many chances as we did you’d say, ‘Okay, it’s not going to be our day,” he said.

“But we talked a lot all year about character and never giving up and they didn’t give up. They kept just getting a lease of energy and running at them The last score was a fantastic score, in the circumstances, with the pressure that was on.”

They will now meet Castelbar Mitchels of Mayo in the Paddys Day decider at Croke Park for what will be their very first All Ireland Football Club final.
