With an hour to go to kick off it’ll be a very new look and unknown Sligo Rovers side that take to pitch for tonights game at the Showgrounds.
The latest man to occupy the managers office for the hosts is 42 year old ex British Royal Marine Dave Robertson who followed in the tradition of previous Sligo managers by referring to The Hoops as “shams” in an interview with the clubs official website during the week. Last year he had the unwanted accolade of being the first manager to be sacked in the English Football League when Peterborough United dispensed with his services in September after his team had managed to win only one game.
He has brought in 13 new players, while 16 have left the club. Some of the more notable signings they’ve made is goalkeeper Micheal Schlingermann, West Ham loanee Jaanai Gordon, Tobi Adebayo-Rowling and Chris Lyons while Dinny Corcoran, who was their top scorer last season, Sander Puri and Alan Keane are some of the more notable departed.
Rovers travelled to the North West this afternoon with a fully fit squad minus captain Stephen McPhail who is ruled out with a hamstring injury. New signings Dean Clarke and Gary Shaw could be in line to make their league debuts for The Hoops as well as other new signing Killian Brennan who could be in line to make the first league start of his second spell with the club.
Shamrock Rovers were unbeaten against Sligo last year, winning two and drawing one of the games but making predictions based on last season is impossible due to the massive changes in personnel for the hosts. You have to go back to October 2013 for Sligo’s last win in this fixture when they beat The Hoops 3-0 at the Showgrounds.
Ex Sligo player Danny North is sure to get a hostile reception off the home fans if he plays but hopefully this will motivate him even more. Last season he made a dream start to life at Rovers when he got the winner in the first game of the season at home to Pats in a 1-0 victory in the middle of a hurricane!
Best of luck to the lads and the manager for tonight and the season ahead. I’m going to go for a 1-0 win for The Hoops with Mikey Drennan getting the goal.
Kick off in Sligo is 7.45 and you can get updates on the Rovers Twitter page
