A visit to The Irish Times Higher Options 2015

The Irish Times Higher Options is one of Ireland’s biggest student events and has become an annual fixture on the Education calendar.

Luckily I was able to attend this amazing 3-day event in the RDS. Over 170 colleges, universities and institutes of further education showed up at the unique expo this year to share their information with the Leaving Cert students. Thousands of Leaving Cert students visited the event over the last three days. They had the opportunity to speak with directly to all the main universities and colleges around Ireland as well as many from the UK and Europe.

I spoke with some LC students from Tallaght Community School and they told me about their experience here at the exposition. One student, Dean, told me how he felt about the event. “I believe it gives you a great opportunity to talk to the representatives of the different colleges and universities. I was given a ton of information on the courses I was interested in and I feel happier knowing exactly what my course is about. I completely recommend it for next years Leaving Cert students.”

During the day of their visit, the students were able to attend talks and lecture sessions given by speakers of different organisations on topics such as the CAO and the application processes involved to study abroad in Europe. The sessions included a wide variety of careers ranging from Engineering, Nursing, Agriculture, Science and Design.

I also spoke to Allan Finlay, a student wanting to study medicine, gave me his experience of the day, “I thought the Higher Options exposition in the RDS was a fantastic eye opener into the world of 3rd level education, talking to students and attending the speeches of CAO preparation and ‘A life in the Sciences’ was really informative and just and out and out a brilliant day”

There were plenty of free goodies at the event and even a photo-booth. There were competitions to win Debs packages and even a Mini Cooper. I spoke with Niamh Mahon, a student on her school’s debs committee, “I’m on the debs committee in my school so I found the Debs stalls gave me lots of information on Debs planning that we could use and more options for where we could have our school Debs next year.”

Overall it was a brilliant day out for students and teachers at the event. Everyone seemed eager to learn more about the courses and were well on their way to planning their future. I would certainly recommend fifth years to attend the event next year as it seemed like ‘a weight off of the shoulders’.
