Cllr Lawlor welcomes extra support for carers and people with disabilities

Fine Gael Councillor Brian Lawlor said he welcomes the positive announcement by Minister for Health Simon Harris for extra support for carers and people with disabilities.

Cllr Lawlor was speaking following the announcement last night that tens of thousands of people who care for sick or disabled relatives will benefit from next summer under a new Government plan.

“The announced extra supports include a GP visit card for all carers in receipt of carers’ allowance and additional € 10 million to the in October announced budget”, explained Cllr Lawlor.

“Of this € 10 million, € 8 million is for respite care houses all around the country, which will provide 19,000 more respite nights in 2018.”

“I am sure this will make a positive impact for carers all over the country, whose work for our society we can never fully repay, but it is a small step for more support.

“Also it will relieve all those of us a bit, who care for family members and sometimes need a short break from their responsibilities to take care of themselves too.”
