Dubliner Sharleen Collins; From the X Factor to her own Academy

It’s hard to believe at just 29 Clondalkin native Sharleen Collins has achieved so much. From working alongside the stars on the X Factor to traveling around the world as a make up artist, she’s been a busy lady.

Now however she has decided to come home and do what she does best from Dublin City Centre with her new business Sharleen Collins Academy. The academy which is located on Lower Lesson Street is where Sharleen will train her newest recruits in all she knows about the world of make up and just how to get that dream job.

Although still very young Sharleen has been in the industry a long time, since she was 17 she has worked as a make up artist and from day one she received recognition for her skills which then opened doors with world leading make up brands.

We at InTallaght caught up with Sharleen this week to speak about her career to date and how the idea of the Academy came about;

“When I was working for MAC I turned MAC PRO which meant I moved to London to work for them, working in London was great. While working there I got signed with X Factor. So I done all the make up for the live shows, I also got to work for Strictly Come Dancing, The Brit Awards, Fashion Week, U2 music videos and many more huge shows. Obviously then I had to make the decision, my freelance career was taking over. I couldn’t keep up with the hours, I decided I was going to work for myself”

After deciding to go out on her own the idea of the Academy was the next plan for Sharleen, she explained all about the now highly sought after course she provides;

“The Academy has taken me the last two years to set up, it is an ITEC International make up college. We have reputable tutors from London, top artists from Ireland that will be in throughout the course. The cert for this course is recognised worldwide, which means you can apply for a job anywhere in the world. When you leave the Academy you leave with an ITEC Level 2 certificate in Makeup that is internationally recognised worldwide. You will also receive an In-House Diploma as a Professional Makeup Artist from Sharleen Collins Academy. You will also leave with a massive photo-shoot. The courses are three months long, we do day groups and we do evenings and Sundays”

Sharleen tells us why her Academy stands out from any of the rest in that area and why it is not just a course for those wanting to become make up artists but for those who simply enjoy the art of make up;

“What is so different about my academy, is that I’m a make up artist. I’ve worked for years as a make up artist and I’ve worked with the top brands, the biggest celebrities and shows. I’m not a business woman, I didn’t just decide ‘oh there is money to be made in this’ I have the contacts, I know how to get the jobs and most importantly I know how to train people. Anyone can open a make up school but I can promise you if you want the best then train with me because the standards are incredible”
