Emergency Department nurses to go on strike tomorrow

Emergency department nurses are to go on strike in hospitals across the country, including Tallaght tomorrow, Tuesday December 14th. Members of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) will strike tomorrow for two hours at each hospital with Tallaght Hospital nurses striking from 10am-12 noon. Cavan General Hospital is also striking at the same time while University Hospital Galway nurses will strike from 2pm-4pm.

Talks between INMO and Health Service Management failed to reach a successful agreement to prevent the strikes and David Hughes, deputy general secretary of INMO said that the HSE’s approach lacked credibility which see “not enough nurses to look after the patients and no ability to recruit nurses into those departments.”

Figures from INMO’s “Trolley/Ward Watch” show that nearly 2,500 admitted patients had to wait on trolleys in the first week of December alone. Emergency Department nurses voted 92% in favour of the strike and will also strike on another day in the New Year.
