Independent Senator Katherine Zappone opened a new office in Tallaght Village on Saturday October 10th. The opening marked the start of her General Election campaign to become a TD.
The office is located across from the Dominican Priory where Senator Zappone was first invited by a local woman Mary Sweeney to teach a course in Women’s Studies in 1986. This led to her and her partner Ann Louise co-founding The Shanty which became An Cosán. Working with local people, Senator Zappine developed An Cosán into one of the largest adult education centres in the country.
She spoke at the launch about her reason for running for election:
“My decision to run as an Independent candidate in Dublin South West for the next General Election affords me the freedom to think, build relationships, negotiate and act outside of the strictures and regulations of party politics and whips. Independence allows a greater creativity to bring one’s own gifts and experience to the political agenda.
She continued by saying that freedom to think and act with imagination is “precisely what Ireland needs now to change its direction from austerity politics to the politics of generativity and equality for everyone.”
Senator Zappone has worked with the people of Dublin South West for over 30 years and has a strong history of fighting for social justice and a fairer Ireland.
