The Ireland Under 18 women’s basketball team are hoping to boldly go where no Irish team has gone before when they take on Israel today in the quarter-final of the FIBA U18 European Championship Division in the National Basketball Arena.
The hosts head into this evening’s 6.15 pm clash in flying form having already recorded five consecutive victories in the tournament so far, their latest coming on Wednesday when they beat Ukraine by 20 points (77-57) to top Group D.
This very impressive Irish team is the first ever underage squad from this country to go through the group phase unbeaten.
Now they want to break another record by going further than any other Irish team in history and reach Saturday’s semi final.
Speaking ahead of hat is expected to be a sold out clash, coach Tommy O’Mahony was wary of the threat posed by the Israelis.
“They are really tough
“They have a lot of guards and a lot of shooters, they like to shoot the three in transition.
“We’ll have to work on our defence, big time.”
“We always talk about sharing the ball and taking the right option and when other teams are scouting us, there’s no one player who dominates the scoring.”
All of the tournament’s quarter-finals will take place at the National Basketball Arena today, with the remaining classification games (9th-23rd place) tipping off at the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown.
Tickets for all games are available now on www.eventbrite.ie and Irish fans are being advised to get their tickets early as it’s predicted the game will sell out.
