Irelands best women’s basketball players to compete in Tallaght this weekend

This weekend sees the National Arena in Tallaght play host to a massive festival of women’s 3×3 basketball.

It all starts at 11am Saturday morning and promises to be an excellent showcase of the sport with some of the country’s best athletes going up against each other. Admission to the arena is free.

“The tournament aims to increase participation in the 3×3 format of the game by Ireland’s top female basketball players,” said Basketball Ireland 3×3 co-ordinator Matt Hall.

“The ultimate goal is Olympic qualification if, as FIBA anticipates, it is added to the Olympic programme for Tokyo 2020. Even being in with a chance of qualification would mark a huge stride for women’s basketball, but the work must start now.”

The Irish women’s 3×3 basketball team gave a great account of themselves at the European Games in Baku last year where they made it to the quarter finals before being narrowly beaten by eventual winners Russia in the quarter final after putting in a superb performance.

The talented side certainly gave great encouragement for the future in that tournament with wins over Slovakia and the Czech Republic prior to their clash with the Russians.

The tournament also marked Irish basketball’s first participation under an Olympic banner since 1948.
