Manchester United dressed their mascots as X-Men and killed football

As Manchester United captain, there’s nothing like the pride and dignity of leading your team out on to the pitch at Old Trafford.

Unless, of course, you’re accompanied by a mascot who looks like he was heading for a cosplay festival and took a wrong turn somewhere.

Yes, Wayne Rooney did his best to look like everything was perfectly normal as he made his Old Trafford entrance for the Bournemouth match holding the hand of a tiny X-Man.

It was all part of a promotional tie-in between United and 20th Century Fox for the upcoming movie X-Men: Apocalypse.

Four of the poor kids had the full paint job, while all 11 got the name of one of the X-Men on their backs.

Who says football is too commercialised?
