Tallaght Hospital Professor to mark World Kidney Day with free public health talk

Professor George Mellotte, a Consultant Nephrologist at Tallaght Hospital, will mark World Kidney Day by giving a public health information talk on kidneys.

Entitled: “Your kidneys – What you need to know and why” the talk is the second instalment in Tallaght Hospital’s “Public Health Education Series”.

It takes place at Tallaght Library this Thursday 9th March at 6pm and will focus on providing useful health information and tips as well as answering any questions that the public may have.

This event is open to all members of the public who wish to attend, free of charge. Professor Mellotte will discuss the increased occurrences of kidney disease, particularly amongst older people, along with the importance of increased home dialysis in order to increase the independence of patients.

Professor Mellotte is a leading consultant in the area of nephrology at Tallaght Hospital and has contributed to the Hospital being recognised as a group and regional hub in this area.

This talk is the second in Tallaght Hospital’s Public Health Education Series. The first event saw Dr. Anthony O’Connor give a talk entitled “Your Bowel – What you need to know and why” at Killinarden Junior School. The talk focused on providing useful health information and tips as well as answering audience questions.

Professor George Mellotte, Consultant Nephrologist at Tallaght Hospital, said:

“I am delighted to be giving this talk as it is such an important area of public health.

“Kidney failure is a prominent health issue, particularly among older people.

“This has increased in line with our aging population as a country.

“I look forward to engaging with people on this issue, on tips about looking after their health and in answering their questions. I hope to provide people with all the information they require.”

Catherine Heaney, Chairperson of the PCAC, also commented, saying:

“This talk is another engaging and relevant event as part of Tallaght Hospital’s Public Health Education Series.

“I am delighted that someone as experienced as Professor George Mellotte is making time available to give this talk in our community.

“I encourage everyone in the local community to come along to these very informative events.

“It is a fantastic chance to learn about our kidney health from an expert in the field.”
