Tallaght Community Council (TCC) has launched the 34th community led awards, Tallaght Person of the Year Awards, which recognise and celebrate unsung heroes who live or work in Tallaght.
The busy launch took place at the heart of Tallaght village, in the aptly named and award winning, The Station restaurant on Saturday, the 23rd of September to an enthusiastic crowd of all ages and from all corners of the greater Tallaght area.
The launch was attended by the Mayor, Paul Gogerty and this year’s special guest, sporting legend and Tallaght native, Denis Bastick. The 8 2016 category winners were also in attendance as they present forward the handmade perpetual trophies which will be presented to 2017 category winners.
The community awards were the brain child of Charles Morton over 3 decades ago. The awards were handed over to TCC to be guardians of and to run – a task the TCC volunteers have relished for decades. The awards have seen a surge in popularity in recent years now that nominations are made online – www.tallaghtpersonawards.ie
Gerry Stockil, the voluntary Chairperson of TCC said:
“We are delighted to have sporting legend and Tallaght native, Denis Bastick as our special guest for the awards this year. Denis epitomises what dedication and team work can achieve and is a great ambassador for Tallaght and the spirit of the awards. On Saturday, we are renaming our Sports Category award to the Maurice McConnell Sporting Award, in honour of the late Maurice McConnell and founding TCC member who sadly passed away last month.”
Tara De Buitléar, PRO of TCC said:
“The core value of the awards is to recognise the unsung heroes who very often silently and diligently give to their community or field without looking for publicity or formal recognition of their efforts. These community giants are very often the life blood to clubs, associations, communities, special causes and support groups. This is your annual chance to recognise and appreciate them by nominating them for the Tallaght Person of the Year Awards. Online nominations open on Monday 25th of September and run for 4 weeks, closing on Monday 23rd of October”.
This year’s special guest of honour, Denis Bastick spoke vivdly at the launch about the importance of recognising those who, very often move silently among us all but whose impact is immense.
The award ceremony will be held in The Red Cow hotel on Friday the 17th of November, where all the nominated unsung heroes will be honoured.
Local business support is vital to the awards and TCC are keen to hear from local businesses interested in becoming an awards sponsor.
Tickets for the award ceremony will be available from the box office which is located in The Echo offices in Partas, Main Road in Tallaght village from 2nd of October.
